A Busy Kentucky Derby Day

It was great to see everyone who came by for the Derby. A lot of new faces, a lot of familiar faces, and a fun time for all. You could feel the buzz in the air as we got closer and closer to the race, and the energy in the building was amazing.

The race (the good and the tragic) have been well covered by the media, so there is no need to go into the details here. But hopefully everyone who came to Sports Haven this weekend had a great experience. The staff had a busy but fun time and enjoyed interacting with everyone.

The Drive to the Triple Crown Contest is in full swing with the Kentucky Derby Just Days away. During each leg of the Triple Crown, New Haven Register Sports write Dan Nowak will make his selection.

You can play along and try to beat Nowak’s picks. Just pick up an entry form at Sports Haven, Bristol RaceView Center, New Britain RaceView Center or Torrington RaceView Center. Or, you can enter online at www.handicappingcontests.net.

It’s easy to play, and free to enter. All you have to do is make your pick for the big race. Players who have the winning horse are put in a drawing for $100 and a gift certificate for dinner at Sports Haven!

Kentucky Derby Day

You can feel the buzz in the air as Kentucky Derby Day is quickly approaching. The staff here does a great job handling the busy crowds we get for the run for the roses. Here is some basic information on our schedule so you can be prepared for the big day.

The 134th running of the Kentucky Derby will be Saturday, May 3, 2008 from Churchill Downs. Churchill Downs post time is 11:00 a.m. Post time for the Kentucky Derby, which is race #10, will be 6:04 p.m.

Advance wagering on the Kentucky Derby will begin Thursday, May 1, 2008.

There will be no coupled entries or mutuel fields. All horses will run as separate betting interests with a maximum 20 horse field possible.

On Friday, May 2, (Kentucky Oaks Day) Sports Haven will open at 10:00 A.M. Churchill first post will be 11:00am.

Saturday, May 3, (Derby Day) we will also open at 10:00 A.M.

Wagering on the Derby Double will also be offered again this year. This wager involves a Daily Double on the Kentucky Oaks, (run Friday) and the Kentucky Derby. This wager will be run under normal daily double rules, and will be commingled with Churchill Downs. Wagering will open on Thursday, May 1 and will close at post time of the Kentucky Oaks, aprox. 5:45 on Friday, May 2.
